ANNUAL CHRISTMAS DRAW AND SOCIAL EVENT

This year’s cheese and wine event, held on 2nd December 2011, at St Georges’s Hall, Brockworth, was attended by over 70 supporters and guests. Everyone enjoyed the fine selection of cheeses, pate and mince pies ‘washed down ‘by plenty of mulled wine. Entertainment was again provided by Mr Dennis Johns and his family, ably accompanied by Mrs Joan Phillips on the piano.  Later in the evening we held our Annual Draw at which Dennis’s grand daughter drew the tickets for the lucky winners of 14 excellent prizes.

We would love to see you here again next year. Please bring along some of your family and friends, I’m sure they will enjoy the evening.

GLOUCESTERSHIRE COMMUNITY FOUNDATION FREEMASONS FUND

The Trustees are delighted to announce that during November 2011 the Chest Fund was the recipient of a grant of £2,000 from this newly established charity. This charity, administered by EDF – Energy, was set up recently to support various good causes and charities in the county. We are more than pleased to allocate this donation to our latest fund raising project – the acquisition of a portable ultrasound scanner for the Chest Ward, Gloucestershire Royal Hospital.  Thank you GCF Freemasons Fund for your most welcome support.

LATE MR ARTHUR COOKE

Mrs L C Cooke, who recently lost her beloved husband, attended our social evening together with her lovely daughter. Dr Andrew White, the late Mr Cooke’s chest physician, was in attendance and he was delighted to receive cheques to the value of £1015, from family and friends, in his memory. These monies, agreed by Mrs Cooke, will be allocated to the portable ultrasound scanner appeal.

Chairman of Trustees Bernard Cooper and his son David walked 26 miles 384 yards of the Cheltenham Circular Challenge to raise funds. The sponsor money is not all in yet but it looks likely to be in excess of £600.00. Unfortunately the pub en route was closed! Tough luck Mr.Chairman!

Ron Hannam organized the annual skittles match versus the Rising Sun at Hartpury. Unfortunately the Rising Sun’s skittlers again proved too strong for the Chest Fund All Stars but, once the sponsorship is collected, the Gloucestershire Chest should benefit by about £700.00.

The road to raise £107,000 for E.B.U.S. was celebrated when the President of the Gloucestershire Chest Fund formerly presented the equipment to the Consultant Chest Physicians of Cheltenham Gneral and Gloucestershire Royal Hospitals. The presentation was held at the Lilly Brook Golf Club, Cheltenham when Trustees, volunteers and supporters of the Fund enjoyed the evening.

On Thursday 17th February 2011Gloucestershire Chest Fund’s President, Dr. Willie Carson formally presented four delighted Consultant Chest Physicians with the equipment to facilitate the provision of an ElectroBronchial UltraSound service for Gloucestershire. From left to right: Dr. Andrew White (Gloucestershire Royal Hospital), Dr. Ian Mortimore, Dr Ananthakrushnan Raghuram(Cheltenham General Hospital) Dr WillieCarson(President) Dr John Prior (GRH) It is estimated that when this equipment is fully functional at least 50 Gloucestershire patients every year from across Gloucestershire will avoid surgery. Normally patients suspected of having this type of  lung cancer are sent to Thoracic Surgical Units in either Bristol or Birmingham for a two or three day stay. This equipment provides a day procedure which will take about 35 minutes. This machine is the first one to be used in Gloucestershire but is expected to be the norm in the future.

We are always open to new suggestions that will help you enjoy yourselves while supporting our causes.
